My name is Aaron Chen and I am a data scientist! I have a background in chemical engineering (with a PhD and you can freely read my dissertation here). I am arguably one of the people with a non traditional background who pivoted into data science: in undergrad, I learned some Java and Octave/Matlab to graduate and also help work in a research group on cancer cell apoptosis. I thought I did not like coding, so I joined a wet lab chemistry group to work on using graphene with biomedical device applications. Turns out, I really did not like working in the lab, and I was enjoying coding up ways to speed up data analysis or performing investigations on how to better implement technology to increase my lab’s work output/reduce time needed to perform analysis. Post graduation, I talked to some data scientists and software engineers on what I should try, and they all suggested pivoting into data science! I ended up doing Flatiron School’s in person data science bootcamp in late 2019 and I have been a data scientist ever since.
I decided to make this site after realizing that I was writing down a bunch of things on Post It notes, OneNote pages, and random sheets of paper and I was losing track of my ideas and notes! So I decided to compile notes in one public spot to share as much of my knowledge and experience as I can with people also into data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, and I hope that this is all helpful!
Oh the origin of the site name? Well for my first professional data scientist role, which was in US Government Federal Service, my teammates and I were asked to come up with a fun name for our group that would be easy to remember and fun to say. Since I enjoy puns, I enjoyed the request and somehow almost immediately came up with “What about BuenosDS? Because we’re good people who do data science and wish the best for others!” Our team proposed this to our manager, who did not like the name, and I decided to keep it!
